International collaboration refers to papers published by both US-based and non-US based institutions. Each geographic region reflected authors affiliated to research institutions in that region. Using as case study, the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) project, we analyzed texts from bibliographic records along three geographic axes: US-only publications, non-US publications and international collaboration. Abstract We analyze the scientific discourse of researchers in a specialty field in Astronomy by examining the influence that geographic location may have on the development of this field. She is also interested on the epistemological questions in KO and how research in KO intersects with other fields necessarily engaged in designing and using various forms of KO tools such as Artificial Intelligence, LIS, Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Information Retrieval (IR). Of particular interest to her is how new technology and tools can assist the creation of advanced forms of knowledge organization (KO) systems (topic maps, ontologies). Her research revolves around the use of linguistic, terminology methods and the application of language technologies in text mining and information retrieval. The study is ground-breaking as it addresses the needs of development of KO competencies among LIS professionals from the perspective of findings of a systematic study of the curricula of 68 schools.īiography Fidelia Ibekwe-SanJuan is currently a professor at the Information-Communication Department of the Jean Moulin University in Lyon, France. Library and information education programs may benefit from the findings for incorporating needed content in KO coursework. The paper is limited to the treatment of KO in 68 selected programs of LIS education. This analysis provided an overall picture of the coverage of KO courses in LIS programs of 68 selected schools located in Southeast Asia, the Europe and accredited schools of North America. This study analyzed the curricula of LIS accredited schools and leading schools in selected regions of the world based on the course titles presented on their websites. This paper aims to analyze how LIS schools have responded to the needs of developing competencies related to information and KO among its graduates. Fresh emphasis is noted on metadata, data mining, info-maps, knowledge maps, taxonomy, ontologies and other strategies for organizing an organization’s explicit and tacit knowledge. LIS education programs have strong traditions of teaching KO. The components of information and KO have similar philosophies, theories, approaches, strategies and tools. Knowledge organization (KO) content is central to educational programs of library and information science (LIS) and information and knowledge management (KM) programs. TermWatch can be useful either as a starting point for grasping the conceptual organization of knowledge in a huge text collection without having to read the texts, then actually serving as a suggestive tool for populating different hierarchies of a thesaurus or an ontology because its clusters are based on semantic relations. This could change the way in which information professionals (librarians and documentalists) undertake knowledge organization tasks. The clusters are mapped onto a 2D using an integrated visualization tool. The clusters represent, for a given term, its closest neighbours in terms of semantic relations. The clusters formed exhibit the different relations necessary to populate a thesaurus or an ontology: synonymy, generic/specific and relatedness.
The resulting system TermWatch, extracts terms from a text collection, mines semantic relations between them using complementary linguistic approaches and clusters terms using these semantic relations. We propose a comprehensive methodology for thesaurus construction and maintenance combining shallow NLP with a clustering algorithm and an information visualization interface.
